Description: 1851 Manuscript Notice of Sale – Corsicana, Texas Offered for your consideration is a small manuscript announcement of the sale of property of a David P. Flint, a deceased individual from Navarro County, Texas. The announcement is headed “Notice” and states that “By virtue of an order of the County Court of Navarro County, I will offer for Sale at the Court House door in the Town of Corsicana, on the 25th day of August A D 1851 between the hours of 10 am and 4 O. Clock P. M. the following property belonging to the Estate of David P. Flint decd to wit ...”. This lengthy introduction is followed by a short list of the items to be sold, including “… One large Bay Mare, one; two year old Horse Colt, one; 1 year old Mule Colt and one Cow and Calf …”. The “… Said Sale to be made on a credit of Three Months: the purchasers giving their Notes with approved securities …”. The document is dated “… 13th August 1851 …” from “… Corsicana …” and was authorized by “John S. Flint” in his capacity as “Admst of the Estate of David P Flint decd”. The back of the document states that this notice was “… posted up at 3 public places in the County 13th August 1851 …” and that it “… Filed Aug 27th A. D. 1851 …”. It is signed at the conclusion by “R. N. White” in his capacity as Corsicana County Clerk. Though the items being sold are in no way exciting, it is quite rare to find a document of this type, especially given the nature of the piece (it wasn’t necessary for it to survive longer than the few days that it would be posted). An interesting piece of pre-Civil War Texana. Cursory research indicates that there was a David Flint who served as a ferryman at Porter’s Bluff on the Trinity River around 1850, though no middle initial is noted, therefore it cannot be positively said that it is the same individual mentioned in the document. Robert Newton White was born in South Carolina on December 8, 1810 and moved to Texas in 1845. He was appointed as the first postmaster of Corsicana but was unable to serve since he was already serving as the County Clerk. He served as County Clerk for ten years, resigning in 1856 due to failing eyesight. He raised horses and livestock near Dawson until 1870, after which he returned to Corsicana and was instrumental to having a railroad routed to that location in 1871. Robert N. White died on May 25, 1891. The presently offered document exhibits significant signs of use and improper long-term storage. It is executed in period ink on light blue paper. Numerous toning spots and stains are present across the entire surface, though whether this happened when the piece was hung or during storage is not readily apparent. A small hole appears at the center, surrounded by toning and a number of small black spots (possibly dried mold). Several horizontal folds are present, probably caused when the piece was stored (one of these has caused some paper separation at the left center). Pinholes are present at each corner of the piece, obviously placed there when it was hung as noted on the back. A 1½ inch diagonal tear is associated with the holes at the lower right, neatly repaired with archival tape. This interesting document measures approximately 6 x 7.75 inches and would look great framed with an old illustration of the Corsicana Court House (as mentioned in the document), though the autograph of R. N. White would be hidden unless the framing was double sided. A $4.95 charge will be added to the purchase for postage and insurance.
