Description: Well-preserved 173-year-old copy of "The Logic and Utility of Mathematics" by Charles Davies, published in 1851. A rare collectible for antique book enthusiasts, those interested in math and math teaching, and historians. Davies (1798-1876) was a longtime professor of mathematics at West Point, the United States Military Academy. He wrote a series of mathematical textbooks. This volume, written toward the end of his teaching career, combines the theory and generalizations of the French school of mathematics with the practical methods of the English school. This volume describes in detail the approach used at the U.S. Military Academy, a leader in upper-level math instruction during the height of the Davies’ career in the early 1800s. Assumed first edition. HC. Brown boards with engraved logo on front and back cover and gold-brown title on spine; spine also embossed with circled words “School Teacher’s Library.” Board corners show wear and some crushing. Spine shows fading from light. Top and bottom of spine show wear and some fraying at edges. Text pages show some sunning but are clean and free of underlining or written comments. Inside front cover has a presentation label from previous owner (Castilian Library). Frontspiece has a 1973 birthday note in pen and a name of a previous owner in pencil.
