Description: 1857 Abraham Shell Certified Power Attorney - Knights Ferry Calif *GOLD RUSH* Abraham Schell was born in Gallupville (or Wright) in Schoharie County, NY in 1817. Of German descent, his family was among the earliest settlers of the area. His wife Catherine (1821-1898) was a native of Middleburgh, NY. He was in the mercantile business in Albany before joining friends and heading west. One of the early Forty-niners, Schell found great fortune in California. Schell owned a celebrated vineyard in Knight's Ferry, California, which at one time consisted of 15,535 acres. He died in Knight's Ferry in February of 1894. His remains were then transported to Middleburgh (NY) Cemetery, where he had previously erected a $2000 monument. Abraham Shell was Knight Ferry's lawyer & banker. This document he [likely] prepared and attested to while living in Knights Ferry. The seal is for the State of New York in San Joaquin County, California as Commissioner for the State of New York. The document was prepared for Miner Walden, son of Hiram Walden: Hiram Walden (August 21, 1800 – July 21, 1880) was a United States Representative from New York. Walden was born in Pawlet, Vermont on August 21, 1800, where he attended the district schools. He moved to Berne, New York in 1818 and to what became known as Waldenville, in the Town of Wright, Schoharie County, New York in 1821. There he married Sophia Dominick, daughter of John Dominick and Margaretha Ball. Walden was engaged in the manufacture of axes; major general of militia; member of the New York State Assembly in 1836; was one of the supervisors of the town of Wright, New York in 1842; elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-first Congress (March 4, 1849 – March 3, 1851); chairman, Committee on Patents (Thirty-first Congress); was not a candidate for renomination in 1850 to the Thirty-second Congress; resumed his former manufacturing pursuits; was also employed in the customhouse in New York City; lived in retirement until his death in Waldenville, New York on July 21, 1880; interment in Berne and Beaverdam Cemetery (formerly called Pine Grove), Berne, New York. There is an additional document (not included) from his father to David Shell instructing David on the used of this document (again, NOT included) An historic character of the early days of Stanislaus County and Modesto, Miner Walden a man who yielded a strong influence in the early political circles as he did in business affairs. A native of New York he was born in Schoharie County, May 23, 1823 the son of Hiram Walker who served in the state legislature. The lad grew up in his home county attended the public scholls there and made that section his home until in 1850 he came to California by way of Panama in search of gold. It was soon after that he appeared in San Joaquin Valley and here he lived and labored. In August 1855 Miner Walden was united in marriage with Miss Lucinda Hildebrand a native of Indiana where she was born in 1840. With the tide of emigration her father took her family from Indiana first to Iowa when that was a virgin country and later in 1853 came overland to California. They used oxen drawn wagons and took six months to make the journey. They left the Platte River to cross the plains and mountains to Salt Lake City, Lucinda walking most of the way bare footed besides the wagon. Fortunately they were not molested by Indians and their trip was without incident. They came by Strawberry Flats took the Walker Route to Sonora where they spent a few months in the gold mines. In 1854 they moved to Stanislaus County and settled on the north side of the river at Knights Ferry and Oakdale where Indians proliferated. In 1857 Miner Walden and his wife came to Junction Ranch consisting of 3000 acres which Walden had acquired on the east side of the San Joaquin and the north side of the Tuolumne river. In the meantime Miner Walden engaged in freighting, ran a livery business and acted for the Wells Fargo Company. He prospered and became active in Democratic circles, and served in the state legislature for two terms. He served as Justice of the Peace in Tuolumne City. He was an Oddfellow and served as noble grand of the Tuolumne lodge. When the new town of Modesto was founded, Walden bought considerable real estate in the new town site.
