This justly celebrated treaty was formed in the year 1682" (followed by facsimile signature of William Penn) Engraved and Printed in Philadelphia by Illman & Sons, [1856 or 1857] Size (including margins): 42, 5 x 32 cm ( 16 ¾ x 12 ½ inches) Attractive 19th century engraving commemorating William Penn’s Peace Treaty of 1683 with the Native American Lenape tribe at Shackamaxon (today the neighborhoods of Fishtown, Kensington, and Port Richmond in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania). The engraving, after a painting commissioned by William Penn’s son to the celebrated American artist Benjamin West (1730-1820) executed around 1771. At the foreground a town with colonial buildings is being constructed next to Indian tents. Under the image a poem: "How beautiful the scene portrayed above, A treaty, framed in Justice, Truth, and Love! Our City's Founder and the peaceful "Friends". Stoop to no subterfuge, to gain their ends; While with unswerving confidence, around Their Indian brethren occupy the ground. This incident, a maxim may afford, And prove our PENN was "mightier than the sword." Condition: Very good despite some creasing at corner.
