'The Spendthrift' is a novel following the lives of four people, all entangled in complicated romantic feelings, with the morality of money hanging over them. Depsite being a prolific author, William Harrison Ainsworth has been largely forgotten after his death. His novel 'Rookwood', featuring the highway man Dick Turpin, gave him a his first success as a writer, and he went on to right thirty-nine novels. Some of his other novels include 'The Tower of London', 'The Lancashire Witches', 'The Constable de Bourbon', 'Boscobel', and 'Preston Fight'. Illustrated by Hablot K. Browne, who is also known widely as 'Phiz', the illustrator of many of Charles Dickens' novels. With a frontispiece and a further seven plates throughout. Collated, complete. CONDITION In the original published cloth binding, with blind decoration to the boards, and gilt decoration to the spine. Externally, smart. Light rubbing and markings to the boards, causing light discolouration. A little light rubbing to the joints. Minor bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. Minor rubbing to the spine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean with the odd handling mark and scattered spotting throughout, mostly to the first and last few pages and to the plates. Small chip to the fore edge of pages 137 to 140. Closed tear to the fore edge of page 167/168.
