It was published in 1859 by the American Sunday School Union, founded in Philadelphia in 1824 with the mission to promote literacy and the spiritual development of children. This is the sort of book that was produced cheaply for young women in the Victorian era to disseminate useful moral and religious information. Many of the Sunday School Union's books were given out for free. The Sunday School Union was non-denominational in its structure: board members included representatives from the Baptist, Methodist, Congregational, Episcopal, Presbyterian, and Reformed Dutch churches. Although this book is only in fair condition, it is an amazing survival of an important influence on 19th century children's literature in America. 4 1/8" by 6 1/4". Fair condition. Decorative stamped brown cloth-covered boards are worn, stained, and bumped. Gilt lettering on spine is worn. The binding is intact but the hinges are splitting at front and back. Page 11/12 is ripped and half is missing; back free end papers are missing; remnants of library materials[?] have been removed on the front and back fly leaves; pencil marks on both fly leaves. Foxing throughout.
