Description: Antique Playbill from the Theatre Royal Haymarket, from around 1860, featuring the play Rough Diamond by the actor / manager John Buckstone, whose ghost was reportedly often seen at the theatre after his death. Please note that the upoer portion of this playbill including the masthead is missing. John Baldwin Buckstone (1802-1879) was an English actor, playwright and comedian who wrote over 150 plays. He starred as a comic actor during much of his career for various periods at the Adelphi Theatre and the Haymarket theatre, managing the Haymarket from 1853-1877. According to director Nigel Everett and stagehands at the Haymarket, Buckstone's ghost has often been seen at the theatre, particularly during comedies and when "he appreciates things" playing there. In 2009, The Daily Telegraph reported that the actor, Patrick Stewart, saw the ghost standing in the wings during a performance of Waiting for Godot at the Haymarket. This lower portion of the playbill measures 11" tall by 10" wide and is on the flimsiet, tissue-thin paper, not intended to survive more than a few days - hence a rare surivor. It is missing its upper section - reflected in the price. Please check photos for condition. £6 + Postage £2.10 UK, £5.50 Europe, £8.25 USA/Can.
