Description: I have here for sale a book entitled THE MODEL MERCHANT OF THE MIDDLE AGES, exemplified in the Story of Whittington and his Cat: an attempt to rescue that interesting story from the region of fable, and to place it in its proper position in the legitimate history of this country, by Reverend Samuel Lysons, M.A. Published by Hamilton, Adams, and Co. in London in 1860. Includes fold-out family tree to rear, as well as b/w frontispiece portrait of Richard Whittington. Dick Whittington and His Cat is the English folklore surrounding the real-life Richard Whittington (c. 1354–1423), wealthy merchant and later Lord Mayor of London. The legend describes his rise from poverty-stricken childhood with the fortune he made through the sale of his cat to a rat-infested country. However, the real Whittington did not come from a poor family of common stock, and there is no compelling evidence supporting the stories about the cat, or even whether he owned one.Brown cloth hardboards with gilt lettering to front board. Blind stamp decoration to both boards, as well as some dirt marks. Spine peeling from text block but still present. Corners bumped. Heavily chipped to head and tail. Binding generally tight. Ink annotations to prelims. Pages generally clean, with occasional light smudges. Very good condition. 23 cm x 15 cm, 95 pages.
