Description: Original large-format fold-out 1860 antique lithographed survey chart of the Atlantic Coast between Cape Fear, North Carolina, and Amelia Island, Florida. The map is drawn on a scale of 1:600,000, and the image area measures a generous 56 x 89.8 cm [22" x 35¼"]. It is titled "Sketch E Showing the Progress of the Survey in Section No. V from 1847 to 1860" and was published by the U.S. Coast Survey, A.D. Bache, Superintendent. The are two sub-sketches, each drawn on a scale of 1:200,000, giving a closer look at shoreline details, bays, river mouths, and triangulation, reference points: Bull's Island to Savannah River, including Hilton Head Island, Port Royal Sound, Charleston, Edisto Island, Aiken, Tybee Island Lighthouse, Bird Key, Fort Pulaski, and Beaufort. Ossabaw Island to Cumberland Island, including Turtle River, Jekyll River, St. Simon Sound, Brunswick, Darien, Butler's Rice Mill, Sapelo Light House, Julientown, and Blackbeard Island. Condition: This map was printed on a lightweight paper which has toned and cracked along one fold. Otherwise in very good condition, bright and clean, complete and intact, with no marks, rips, or tears.
