Item 484552 ◊ Mid-1860's Carte De Visite Photograph, A Handsome Young Man in Suit and Cravat, from Philadelphia, PA A rare and impressive, "Mid-1860's Carte De Visite (CDV) Photograph, A Handsome Young Man in Suit and Cravat." Photography Studio: Fredrick Gutekunst, Philadelphia, PA. "Gutekunst" by the way translates from German as "Good Art." Very appropriate name for a photographer. The records show that he operated his studio in Philadelphia from at least 1860-1871. But there are later records that show that a studio was still opperating in the early 1900's at the same address. It might have been his son (or daughter) taking on the family occupation. It is an outstanding, period photograph, which measures approx. 3-1/2" X 2-1/4" (9 cm. X 5.5 cm. ) and is mounted on its original Card Mount, which measures approx. 4" X 2-1/2" (10.5 cm X 6 cm.) This interesting CDV photograph is an albumen print mounted on a heavy cardstock, and it shows a upper-body shot of a handsome young man in nice, but typical clothing of the time, wearing a suit and fashionable cravat. Our favorite part his his hairstyle, which is guaranteed to impress the young ladies. There are no markings on the card to indicate who the subject was. He has a look on his face, like he's thinking of the girls too. He's almost actually smiling. This fascinating "Mid-1860's Carte De Visite Photo" is in very good condition. The most obvious flaw is a tiny tear in the left side edge. There is a small amount of surface wear on the front, but the back is very clean. The photo is exhibits sharp focus, strong contrast and rich, warm tonality. You can see that the upper two corners are clipped. This does not mean that the corners were creased and broke off, rather the photographer or a previous owner clipped the corners for insertion into the photo album, to protect the album from damage.
