Description: Tintype photograph (just over 2 ¼” by 3 ½”) of a man in an odd uniform, probably from Rhode Island or Connecticut, circa 1860s to 1870s. The full standing portrait view is not identified. It shows a man dressed in dark trousers with a dark coat over a dark vest, both apparently with brass buttons. Note also the watch fob chain hanging from his vest. The man wears an odd hat, either a brimless sailor’s hat or a cap with a very narrow visor. I bought this from a shop in Connecticut, close by the Rhode Island line, and suspect this tintype came from a local family. The style of backdrop and the square pedestal that the man rests his arm on remind me of photographic studios in the 1860s, as seen in many Civil War military images. The tintype is in good condition with light wear and soiling. The image has some minor emulsion loss around the edges and a bit of surface wear too. There’s some waviness to the tin but not significant creasing on bends. The photograph exhibits good tonal range, just a bit dark throughout, and shows good detail. A nice Civil War era image of a possible sailor!
