Description: Original hand signed 1861 “Five Dollars” Confederate note has a sailor at left and Ceres seated on a bale of cotton at center. This note was printed with black ink. There is no design on the back. The hand inscribed serial number in red ink is “56656”. The note was printed by “J.T. Paterson, Columbia, S.C.”. There were about 200 different people who signed for each treasury official. For the most part they were women, many the wives or daughters of Confederate soldiers who had been killed in action. It was cut cancelled (two X’s cut through note, left and right of center) when taken out of circulation by the Confederate Government. The note will be shipped in a protective sleeve with a dated, hand signed Letter of Authenticity with a photograph of the currency above. All of the artifacts on our site are guaranteed to be original Civil War issue or as stated. Please see our "About ‘ for more information on the framing and artifacts.
