Description: Original 1863 “The State of Alabama” - “Ten Cents” fractional currency issued from Montgomery, Alabama. The note is printed on one side only. The note has an engraved signature and the hand inscribed serial number “46395”. The State seal is at center. These smaller type fractional notes or “emergency script” were issued by most of the southern states and even northern businesses. During the Civil War the hoarding of copper, silver and gold (Hard Cash) resulted in little coinage in circulation. The only way to “make change” was to issue these type notes. Original Civil War artifacts excavated on the Spotsylvania Battlefield near Fredericksburg, Virginia. The lead bullets and other brass artifacts are typical of what was left on the battlefield. The fired Confederate .58 two ring bullet patented by Gardner was made at the Richmond Arsenal in Virginia. The unfired Federal .58 three ring was standard issue for the Springfield Rifle or other contract and imported arms of that caliber. Many of the bullets found on the battlefields are unfired for a variety of reasons. The paper cartridge which held the powder may have broken in their cartridge box, the paper could be wet or they just dropped it in the leaves while loading and just pulled another out. The small lead balls were part of a round called a “Buck & Ball”. The .69 smoothbore round had a one large ball and three of the smaller balls wrapped in one cartridge. The white patina is due to oxidation in the ground. The other brass artifact include a Confederate flat button issued on state militia uniforms, a brass casing for a Federal .56 Spencer carbine, small rivets used on the leather accoutrements and a knapsack hook near the center. The Battle of Spotsylvania Court House was the second major battle in Lt. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant's 1864 Overland Campaign of the Civil War. Following the bloody but inconclusive Battle of the Wilderness, Grant's army disengaged from General Robert E. Lee's army and moved to the southeast. Elements of Lee's army beat the Union army to the critical crossroads of Spotsylvania Court House, Virginia, and began entrenching. Fighting occurred on and off from May 8 through May 21, 1864. They are mounted in a 6” x 8” Riker style case with glass front. The artifacts are just pressed in, we don’t glue them in. All of the artifacts are guaranteed to be original as stated. A hand signed and dated “Certificate of Authenticity” will be issued by Collectors Frame with a photograph and description of the items purchased. The documents pictured will also come with the set. Please see our "About” on front page for more information on the framing and artifacts.
