The back of the photo reads: “W. S. Jacoby Photographer Stroudsburg, PA “ In a publication published many years after this photo was made, this photo is described as, “The Demolished Dinning Room of a Handsome Manson.” “Havoc of Bombardment In a Petersburg Home” Below the picture in the above referenced quote reads the following: “In this room, nearly a handeed years before, the red-coated officers of His Britannie Majesty's troops had gathered ot the long mahogany table, which, with the glittering sideboards and the old portraits, had furnished the apartment. They were unbidden guests and wen. invaders. It was with reinforced courtesy that the lady of the house, whose husband and two sons were wearing the blue and buff of the Cantinental Army, received them. And now, in 1865, this lady’s descendents, the beirs to the old mansion have been forced to move by another invasion that brought home to them the stern decrees of war. The two maiden ladies of proud lineage had been forced in the early stages of the siege to move their belongings to a safer plue. The house had been stripped of furnishings: against the noble old walls the Federal guns had knocked for admittance, presenting no bullet of lodgment with a sweeping bow, but rudely bursting in. After the war was over, its occupants came back; but still, if you should visit them, they could point out to you the traces of the siege.” Condition. Given the age and history, this photo is in good condition. There is oxidation or yellowing throughout. Part of the front of the photo has an orange tone (see photo”. There is a small tear to the paper frame. There back has various spots/discoloration. Please view the photos carefully as they are an important part of the description. Guaranteed Old & Original Bio of Photographer: St. Peter has been home to professional photographers for over 150 years. Hiram J. Jacoby operated one of its earliest studios and was among Minnesota's first photographers to exhibit at the state fair, where he won several honors. A panoramic photograph of St. Peter taken by Jacoby in August 1868 is held by the Nicollet County Historical Society (NCHS), likely shot from a hillside west of the city. NCHS also possesses two photographs of St. Peter's business district from June 22, 1867, attributed to Jacoby despite lacking his signature, as one bears his studio's label. Born in Massillon, Ohio, Jacoby was a Civil War veteran who later moved to Minneapolis and then St. Peter. He operated a studio, a general store, and ran loan and real estate businesses in St. Peter. Jacoby married Martha Alcott Lewis in 1867, and they had two children, one of whom, Grace, became a photographer. Jacoby died on September 25, 1909, and is buried in Woodlawn Cemetery with his wife.
