1867 Letter Camp Scofield VA – Arresting Deserters ~ Signed Geo Buell & O Read

Description: Offered here is a hand written letter. Special Order #14 gives two soldiers permission to dress as civilians and proceed to town to arrest deserters suspected to be in the area. The letter is signed by Lt Col & Brevet Col George P Buell and 1st Lt Ogden Read Post Adjutant. At the close of the Civil War, the Federal Army assumed control of Camp Davis, which was alternately referred to as Camp Schofield by the Federal government. The 29th United States Infantry Regiment was stationed to post - war duty at Lynchburg, with Brevet Major General Orlando Wilcox as commander of the regiment and of the “District of Lynchburg.” Officers specifically assigned to Camp Schofield included Brevet Colonel George P. Buell (post commandant) and Lieutenant Ogden B. Read (post adjutant). As the seat of the Federal presence in the Lynchburg area under Reconstruction, Camp Davis/Schofield also served as the headquarters for District 7 of the Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen, and Abandoned Lands (Freedmen’s Bureau), which covered nine counties in southern Virginia. The letter is 7 ¾” x 9 ¾” and folded into thirds. In the top corner is a small embossed image of the capitol with Congress above it and P & P below it. The bottom third is completely separated, so some text is hard to read. Interesting post Civil War related letter with two nice signatures. No envelope.
