"The Southern Review" was a periodical "that defended the Lost Cause of the Civil War" and was considered to be "the most indefatigable champion of the Southern cause." Its founder and editor was Albert Taylor Bledsoe, a leading literary figure in the South after the Civil War, and fellow cadet of Jefferson Davis and Robert E. Lee at West Point. Prior to the Civil War, Bledsoe had practiced law in Springfield, Illinois, where he knew Abraham Lincoln. Bledsoe used his journal to "publish the literature of an unrepentant South. Fiction that glorified the antebellum years, articles that re-fought political clashes between the North and the South, appeared again and again. The Southern Review did much to bring to prominence the idea of the Lost Cause." The publication came to an end in 1877 after Bledsoe's death. It has been called "one of the best magazines on Southern history and culture ever produced."
