'Cartonnage romantique' binding, with decorative embossed papered boards, and coloured illustration inlaid to upper cover. Size: 8vo (19cm x 11.5cm).Good condition. Binding rather worn, with loss to paper covering at top and foot of spine, as well as quite heavily rubbed corners. Some overall scuffing and minor marking to boards, and some general edge-wear to binding. Split along one side of spine, but hinges and binding quite solid, aside front rear board which is just starting to pull at the bottom edge. Light scattered spotting and age-toning to half-title, frontispiece and title, and a few other pages, otherwise text quite clean and bright., with just some occasional handling marks. It was founded in 1845 by Mother Teresa Ball and fellow nuns at Gavino’s Dwellings, off Cornwall’s Lane. Some years later the nuns moved into the present building on Europa Road. The school began as a private boarding and day school for girls, and the nuns also taught in other schools in Gibraltar. Distinctive decorative bindings like this - known as 'cartonnage romantique' - were produced mainly in the French Second Republic-era, to be given typically as gifts or as school prizes.
