"Harper's Monthly Magazine" was a monthly periodical of literature, politics, culture, finance and the arts. Launched in New York City in June 1850 it is the oldest continuously published monthly magazine in the United States. In the 19th and 20th centuries the magazine published authors such as Herman Melville, Woodrow Wilson, and Winston Churchill.In this volume there are articles on Northern California, Around Lake Leman, The Land of the White Elephant, South Coast Saunterings in England, Rambles in Martinique, The Farallon Islands, A Naturalist in the Heart of Africa, Notes on Pottery and Porcelain, and Secret Regions of the Stage, Walt Whitman's "The Song of the Redwood-Tree", and "Prayer of Columbus"; several articles by Charles Nordhoff, including a great piece titled "The Columbia River and Puget Sound"; "The Fur Seal Millions on the Pribylov Islands", by Herry W. Elliott, "Land of the White Elephant", by S.S. Conant; five installments of "My Mother and I", by Dinah Mulock Craik; "Naturalist in the Heart of Africa", by Helen S. Conant; "How the Rain Comes", by Mary Mapes Dodge; Slave-Hunts in Central Africa; "The Skeleton in Modern Society", by Samuel Osgood; "The Wrong Word", by D.R. Castleton. The book is illustrated throughout with b/w illustrations, most of which are in-text. Half bound brown leather on marbled hardboards with minor marks and wear. Five raised bands with gilt lettering on the spine.
