Description: 1876 SAMUEL TILDEN POLITICAL CAMPAIGN TOKEN~ TILDEN'S CONVENTION BITTERS ~CLEAN ESTATE ITEM Click to see full size image. Click to see full size image. To my bidders: For years I have done business on eBay using the name: gpstorageco*. The items I will be selling from this point on are being sold from my estate and from the estates of friends and relatives. This satirical 1876-1880 Samuel Tilden Political Campaign Token belonged to a friend on mine that recently passed away. He had a small political collection put together in the 1950's & 1960's of about fifty pieces that I will be selling over the next couple months in my other listings. This 1876-1880 James Blaine campaign token is clean and remains bright overall (see photos). It has an 1880 dated obverse referencing Tildens Convention Bitters and a reverse that lists Drakes Plantation Bitters. Drake was apparently a businessman that Tilden was feuding with (see photos). The medal is well struck, measures approximately 28mm and appears made of white metal (see photos). It appears lightly cleaned or possibly has a oxidation from the medal's composition however it remains mostly bright overall with a nice luster (see photos). In 1876 the Donkey Party nominated Samuel J. Tilden for President of the United States. Tilden had been a very successful reform governor of New York, and given the corruption that had marked the Grant administration, he looked to be a very strong candidate. In the general election Tilden won the popular vote and probably won in the Electoral College, but the Elephant Party operatives were able to tie up the results and ultimately were able to steal the election with some shenanigans in the House and Senate. Although Tilden was popular he did have his detractors, and he would have a great many more after he failed to stand up for himself in the post election debacle. Prior the election, it would appear from this medalet that he had made an enemy of a well-known businessman, S.T. Drake, whose company made Drake’s Plantation Bitters. This is a very nice/clean original 1876-1880 Samuel Tilden campaign token that would be excellent for display with a political collection. I see these tokens listed by other eBay sellers for over $1000. but 5this is priced considerably lower and open to offers. The medalet you see in the photos is the one you will receive. Great opportunity for the advanced political collector. Absolutely guaranteed a period piece. Please check my other listings for other political items from the same estate. ~ Bid With Confidence ~ FIXED PRICE, 30 Day Listing Terms and Conditions I MAKE EVERY EFFORT TO IDENTIFY, DESCRIBE & PHOTOGRAPH THE ITEMS AND CONDITIONS.
