Description: This silver peace medal was not presented to the Great Chief Washakie himself, but to have chief that served under him. The name of chief which Washakie is engraved on the middle in the same context as President Grant. They were both very important people to the Shoshonis and they both had great power and authority over the Shoshonis. This silver peace medal was not made by the U.S. Government but perhaps by some group of people looking for favor with the Great Chief Washakie. OBVERSE- President Ulysses Grant - Let us have peace- Liberty- justice (crossed pipe axe and calumet) Peace Gratitude Honer - Chief Washakie of the Shoshonis- 1876 (engraved spear) Camp Brown- Wyoming territory. REVERSE- Peace (with rays) hand engraved scene of pioneer and Indian Chief in peace. Bottom- an olive wreath of peace over a crossed calumet and tomahawk. .925 Sterling Silcer - 72mm x 52mm (3” X 2”) 35 grams. Over one ounce of silver. A very pleasing light tan patina that has been just a bit over cleaned. A 100% museum quality specimen. Came out of the Tex Mulnite collection. (Windsorville, Connecticut)
