Description: Dated 1881, this Kate Greenaway (English artist and book illustrator) drawn monochrome centered, red/rust ceramic wall tile was manufactured by T.R. Boote, Burslem, Staffordshire, England. This particular drawing “Summer is from her Four Seasons Series. The drawing reflects the English countryside, childhood fantasies, and adult parodies. Greenaway’s drawings of children have been compared with Stothards for grace and with Reynolds for naturalness, and those of flowers with the work of van Huysum and Botticelli. She was one of the three most influential, popular and respected English children’s illustrators of her time. The 6” X 6” tile is stamped with the British registry mark on the reverse of each tile which dates it to 1881. This is a used tile salvaged from a home in the UK. Please inspect the photo carefully to insure there are no objectionable condition issues before bidding. Although there are no cracks, some minor age & use related issues may exist. The pattern depicts a young maid in a bonnet watering a garden in the summertime.T & R Boote Potteries ~ Staffordshire England ~ c. 1881Victorian Aesthetic Movement Garden Culture
