Description: One of the Hetzel Collections Grand Edition Jules Verne titles, profusely illustrated with great pictorial boards and “Dessins Par Benett”. Most of these were first published in serial form and when finished, were gathered into book form in time for the holiday market. “La Maison a Vapeur” was first published in 1880; in it, Verne had a group of colonial British tour India in a mechanical elephant in search of the rebel Nana Sahib. This volume is in very good condition with the vivid original cover done in gilt and black. There is fading to the spine but the gilt decorations and lettering still show nicely. All three edges are gilt decorated. There is toning to the paper and some foxing. “J Verne”at top of title page and back spare in pencil.Good Condition: 4to (11” x 7 1/2”): gilt and black pictorial boards on red publisher’s cloth: scuffs and bends to the corners: softening to the head and tail of spine: faded spine with gilt lettering: illustrated, “Dessins par Benett”:toning: foxing: “Les Voyages Extraordinaires: La Maison a Vapeur Voyage: A Travers L’Inde Septentrionale” par Jules Verne: Bibliotecheque d’Education et de Recreation: Paris: J. Hetzel et Cie: 1880 A truly lovely grande Octavo edition of two important works. Cartonnages dores et colores (gilded and colored bindings). Lavishly decorated cover designed for Christmas and New Year’s markets. Nicely illustrated. First editions were published in 1873.. we think this is early 1900’s, but we cannot rightfully determine said date. According to Verne’s editor Pierre-Jules Hetzel, the goal of the Voyages was “to outline all the geographical, geological, physical, historical and astronomical knowledge amassed by modern science and to recount, in an entertaining and picturesque format.. the history of the universe” Doctor Ox is a collection of short stories by Jules Vernes, it is included as well.
