Description: Historical pair of 8.5X8.5 payroll ledgers from the American Museum of Natural History from 1882. Two of the signers we could identify are Joseph Basset Holder (B. Lynn, Mass., 1824; d. 1888) marine zoologist, physician, author. As U.S. army surgeon at Ft. Jefferson Fla., he made important studies on coral formation. The other signer on payroll is Robert Parr Whitfield (b. New Hartford, N.Y., 1828; d. Troy, N.Y., 1910), draftsman, and paleontologist. Became chief illustrator, New York State Geological Survey, 1856; for twenty years made highly finished drawings of fossils for reports of James Hall. Curator of geology, American Museum of Natural History, New York City, 1877-1909, identified and classified the James Hall fossil collection and others; prepared a catalog of the museum's 8,000 types and figured specimens; helped establish the museum's Bulletin.
