The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad (B. And O.) was the first common carrier railroad and the oldest railroad in the United States with its first section opening in 1830. Merchants in Baltimore wanted to discuss business with settlers crossing the Appalachian Mountains. At first, the B&O was located entirely in Maryland: its original line extending from the port of Baltimore west to Sandy Hook, Maryland opened in 1834. There it connected with Harper’s Ferry, across the Potomac River into Virginia, and across the Shenandoah River. The railway did not reach the Ohio River until 1852, 24 years after the project started. It was an important part of the Civil War, allowing the federal government to travel between Washington D.C. and the northern states, especially west of the Appalachian Mountains.
