Description: The Modern Carpenters' Companion and Builders' Guide,Allen Sylvester, Boston MA, 1883 The original copyright is 1883 but there is a piece of paper pasted onto the title page that says "Tenth Thousand Published by Allen Sylvester 35 Haverill Street Boston , Mass. One of these books sent free to any address, on receipt of Price 1895" So I guess this was added to the original printing or this was the same plates reprinted later? At any rate, one sees that geometry wasn't taught much in public schools but mechanics could perform complex calculations and layouts using dividers and squares to achieve difficult angles for stairs and in roof framing. Many of the plates are showing geometrical layouts and drawings, with simple layouts of small houses and roofs, including some bridge framing. Original copies of this book are scarce, but it has been reprinted and digitized. Condition is good and the text is very good. The hard covers are coated with a material that dissolved or chipped away from the underlying paper board on the front and the back. The binding is tight with just a few pages showing a crack at the spine. 207 pages plus an index of illustrations and diagrams. 37 plates total that often include 2 or 3 drawings. There are a number of tables of useful information. 5 3/8" x 7 5/8" Buyer pays cost of Media mail in the US. International buyers welcome. Always up for combined shipping to save.
