Description: I have been thinning out my antique battery collection and here is one of my absolute favorite batteries. It was designed and patented in France by Gustave Trouve. The battery is known as a Trouve Moist Cell. Besides creating this amazing battery, he is credited for the first successful demonstration of an electric vehicle. It was actually just an electric tricycle, but the point is he got it to work when many others failed. And, he most likely was powering the vehicle with a set of his Trouve Moist Cells. This battery has two round plates, one copper (+), the other zinc (-). In between the two plates were a handful of sponge like, round pieces of blotter paper. The top half was soaked in zinc sulfate, the bottom half was soaked in copper sulfate. The battery is in absolutely AMAZING condition. The glass jar is near perfect. The cork, which should be rotted, is also near perfect. And, my guess is, if you were to moisten the blotter paper, the battery would work perfectly. Not too bad for a battery almost 150 years old. The glass jar has embossed writing. Across the top it says "Pile Trouve". "Pile" means a battery made from a column of metal disks (copper and zinc) and pads (soaked in electrolyte), and "Trouve" is from Gustave Trouve, the inventor. Below "Pile Trouve" is smaller writing that I can not make out. The battery is 4" tall and 1 3/4" in diameter.
