Description: Offered is a scarce local New Jersey town history book titled "History Of Port Elizabeth, Cumberland County, New Jersey, Down to The Present Time..." by F.W. Bown with the Centennial Poem by C.B. Ogden. Published 1885 by Lippincott, Philadelphia. Hardcover in brown cloth lettered in gilt; 6" x 9", 58 pp. Three illustrated plates. Issued to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Port Elizabeth, then (and still with a population of under 500)a small town in far southwestern New Jersey in Maurice River Township in Cumberland County. It was first laid out in 1785 on the Manumuskin River. It contains a general history covering early settlers and the laying out of the town on the land of a Mrs. Elizabeth Clark Bodley; sections on "Glasstown" and "Bricksboro", roads, the post office, hotels, schools, churches, the Masonic, Dorcas and Literary societies; the Eagle Glass Works, the Union Glass works "Negro Exodus" (apparently in 1824 two vessel-loads of "Negroes' went to Haiti (spelled Hayti); the Civil War; extensive coverage of the centennial celebration. The book covers are VG, some light spotting, lettering still bright, bit of fraying to the foot of the spine. Firm in its binding, scattered foxing and fingering to the pages and an old ownership signature of a "Miss Helen L. Willets" in the front free endpaper.
