Description: Letter written from Worcester, NY by Harriet Dunham to her mother, Mrs H. E. Space in Huguenot, NY, October 4, 1885. Harriet Emeline Swartwout Dunham (b. 8 March 1861, Deerpark, NY). Harriet Emeline Mulock Swartwout (b. 17 April 1828, probably in Orange County, NY; d. 6 Oct 1896, probably in Orange County, NY) whose husband, Henry Brinckerhoff Swartwout, died 18 July 1865. She married Watson Space of Orange County, NY, 16 Dec 1869. Isabella Swartwout (b. 6 June 1862, Deerpark, NY), sister of the letter writer. Anna Dunham Platt (b. December 1828; d. May 1898, probably in Otsego County, NY). Frank Dunham (b. c 1857, Schenevus, NY), husband of the letter writer. Elvira Merrick DePuy (b. 1828, Allen, NY; d. 1912, Nebraska), a relation of the Swartwout family. Roxalana Druse (b. c 1847; d. 28 Feb 1887, Herkimer, NY). Druse and her daughter had slain, chopped to pieces and destroyed the remains of Roxalana’s 72-year-old husband William. She insisted that her teenage daughter Mary had nothing to do with it. Roxalana was sentenced to be hanged on November 25, 1885 but, due to multiple changes, this was changed to a final, official date of February 28, 1887. As Roxalana Druse’s fatal date approached, said the Saturday Globe (an early national paper mining the product-moving public fascination with mayhem), “she has dwindled to a mere shadow of her former self and would hardly tip the scales at 85 pounds.” George Druse (b. 1877; d. 1959, probably in Monroe County, NY). Information uncertain. Mary Druse (b. 1870; d. 1924, probably in Furnas County, NE). Information uncertain. She received a prison sentence, and was pardoned in 1895. A4
