Description: anarchist vs. the workingman color lithographed cover 1886 This is the cover of the issue of the political humor magazine, Puck, published on April 28, 1886. It is over 135 years old! The sheet measures 10.5 x 14 inches in size, and is in excellent condition, with its lithographed colors warm and vibrant. It would make a lovely display piece, on an interesting historical topic. Below the publication's decorative masthead is an amusing scene showing a bearded anarchist in a wizard's cap as a devious fortune-teller with a deck of cards, trying to trick an honest laborer into falling for his agenda of strikes and boycotts organized by labor unions of the era. The worker seems willing to listen to the pitch, but his poor wife counsels him to avoid succumbing to the lure of Anarchism. Below the cartoon is a title and caption: THE ANARCHIST FORTUNE-TELLER'S DUPE. Workingman's Wife. Husband, don't waste your time here. What will become of us while you are neglecting your work? The scene is set in a parlor, with a factory visible through its window. Beside the anarchist leader is a box marked Compulsory Contributions, and the walls are pasted with slogans, including: Subscribe Here for the Daily Anarchist. The Boycotter's Lucky Star is in the Ascendancy. Pay No Attention to Law & Order . . . A glorious future awaits you if you keep on Boycotting. The cartoon was drawn by Fredric Opper, one of Pucks most prolific artists. The reverse side of the page is mostly devoted to a long anti-union editorial, which is scathing in its denunciation of unions. It says, in part: The time has come when the working-men of this country must fight for their liberty, for their rights, for their self-respect. Their fight is not with their employers . . . . The industrious, able, sober working-man is to-day suffering under a tyranny worse than any possible tyranny of capital or monopolythe tyranny of the trades-unions and so called labor organizations . . . . It is part of such a tyranny as no employer or body of employers ever dared to dream of establishing. Every working-man . . . should rise up to fight it. . . . Etc. _gsrx_vers_1680 (GS 9.8.3 (1680))
