Description: THE PRIMITIVE FAMILY IN ITS ORIGIN AND DEVELOPMENT By C. N. Starcke, Ph.D. Of the University of Copenhagen 1889 First American Edition D. Appleton and Company New York Hardcover, 315 pages plus 8 pages publisher's catalogue This book explores the origins and development of family structures in early human societies, examining various primitive family types across different cultures based on anthropological research at the time of its publication in 1889. Although Carl Nicolai Starcke (1858-1926) wrote a number of books (mostly in his native Danish), this is his most notable work.(See contents pages in the sample photos for more information.) While 21st century copies (with no collectible value) abound in both fancy expensive bindings and less expensive paperback copies, this original 1889 First Edition is scarce. It has a name/date written on the second blank endpaper and a number of pages with underlining and paragraph marks in pen, mostly to a minor degree, and not what I would consider a lot. (One is shown in the sample pictures.) Four of the publisher's catalogue pages are in the front, and the other four are in the rear. Book condition is nearly very good with typical spine end wear on the cover. 5" x 7 3/8" x 1 1/8"
