A fantastic collection. Froude established himself as a well known historian after he published this collection between 1856 and 1870 under the title History of England from the Fall of Wolsey to the Death of Elizabeth. The author spent twenty years researching for the completion of this study; his work was characterised and appreciated particularly for his dramatic rather than scientific treatment of history, approach which he undertook in order to defend English Reformation against the interpretation of Catholic historians. The set is comprised of the first three volumes being the 1897 edition, while volumes IV-XII are the first revised edition of 1893, which saw the change in title to History of England from the Fall of Wolsey to the Defeat of the Spanish Armada. First thus. This work focuses on figures such as Henry the Eighth, Edward the Sixth, Mary, Elizabeth. CONDITION In a sumptuous fine calf binding by the Relfe Brothers, with gilt to the boards and spine, five raised bands, and marbled edges and endpapers.
