A fascinating history of travel around England via stagecoach: its roads, the inns along the way, and the horses who pulled the coaches. The Bath Road I & II, The Exeter Road I & II. The Portsmouth Road, The Brighton Road. Also in this volume are poems by Algernon Swinburne and F. Marion Crawford; articles on ornithology at South Kensington, weasels & fowls; "Among the genteel book illustrators, Hugh Thomson takes first place… His figure drawing is characterized by a careful blending of genteel and humorous elements well suited to the authors he found most sympathetic" (Harthan, 238). In addition, "his style reflected the nostalgia of the time, his fine line drawings of rural characters and gentle countrified society appealed to the imagination of the public" (Olivia Fitzpatrick). Thomson's illustrations for this series of essays on Britain's historic coaching roads were first published in book form in 1888. He was joined in the project by fellow illustrator Herbert Railton, who shared Thomson's relish for period costumes, coaches and horses and achieved his own distinctive style by combining broken lines and ornate detail with large blank areas. The Bath Road - The Exeter Road - The Portsmouth Road - The Brighton Road - The Dover Road - The York Road - The Holy Roads. Illustrated. This book told tales following seven routes (Bath, Exeter, Portmouth, Brighton, Dover, York and Holyhead) all starting from London. The inns along the way and social commentary and tiny bit of people in those days. …… Coaching Age; Coaching and Anecdotes of the Road; A Drive through England, &c., &c.), purely from the coachman's point of view; and then I shall look at it from the point of view of Miss Burney and Mr. Samuel Pepys. With kindred assistance I shall try to get some glimpses of the social life which passed to and fro between London and the provinces from the time when men began to travel, up to the time when they began to arrive at places, but to travel no more. I shall show our ancestors of all ages in all kinds of costumes-trunk hose, doublet and ruffles, sacks and sarcinets, periwigs and full-bottomed coats, beavers and top-boots, busy at those nothings which make travelled life-eating, drinking, flirting, quarrelling, delivering up their purses, grumbling over their bills-a motley crowd of kings, queens, statesmen, highwaymen, generals, poets, wits, fine ladies, conspirators, and coachmen. With the assistance of my able illustrators, I shall picture these worthies in all sorts of positions—on the road and off it, snowed up, in peril from the great waters, waiting for the stage coaches, &c., alighting at the inns-those inns for which England was once famous, with their broad corridors, their snug bars, their four-posted beds hung with silk, their sheets smelling of lavender, their choice cookery, their claret equal to the best that could be drunk in London. Here too I shall hope now and again to make the violet of a legend blow among the chops and steaks; and besides mere chance travellers, to call upon some ghostly and romantic figures who lived near the road when in the flesh, whose residence by it seems to make them of it, and must have caused them many a time to post up and down it on business or pleasure bent, before grim Fate sent them posting to Hades. Any time between the years 1667 and 1670 the issue of some such announcement as the following made Londoners stare : "FLYING MACHINE. All those desirous to pass from London to Bath, or any other Place on their Road, let them repair to the Bell Savage on Ludgate Hill in London and the White Lion at Bath, at both which places they may be received in a Stage Coach every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, which performs the whole journey in Three Days (if God permit), and sets forth at five in the Morning. ….. The Portsmouth road also called the Road of Assassination. Barbarous ... Murder by the Smugglers an atrocity which was spun out over eleven miles of ground which out Newgates anything of the kind to be found in the Newgate Calendar and of which I shall have more to say when I get to the scene of its commission.... ...
