A treasury of unique information on the exploration, subjugation, economic development and exploitation, industry, transportation, military affairs etc in the Belgian Congo under the rule of King Leopold II.. The Belgian Congo was a Belgian colony in Central Africa from 1908 until independence in 1960. The former colony adopted its present name, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), in 1964. Colonial rule in the Congo began in the late 19th century. King Leopold II of Belgium attempted to persuade the Belgian government to support colonial expansion around the then-largely unexploited Congo Basin. Their ambivalence resulted in Leopold's establishing a colony himself. With support from a number of Western countries, Leopold achieved international recognition for a personal colony, the Congo Free State, in 1885. By the turn of the century, the violence used by Free State officials against indigenous Congolese and a ruthless system of economic exploitation led to intense diplomatic pressure on Belgium to take official control of the country, which it did by creating the Belgian Congo in 1908. The first issue of Le Mouvement Geographique of Bruxelles appeared on April 6, 1884. This journal, published by the National Institute of Geography at Bruxelles, was founded by Alphonse-Jules Wauters who during a period of thiry years served first as editor in chief and then as director (1890-1914). Le Mouvement Geographique began as a biweekly and changed to weekly during its publicaton from 1884 to 1922, with an interruption during the First World war. The aim of the journal was to aquaint it readers with the great discovereries and the great achievents of public utility, and to sustain all who wished to expand their horizon with new geographic knowledge and it primarily promoted and documented Belgian colonisation of Congo. At the beginning, the journal depends more specifically on covering activities in African domains of the king, African works and the enterprises of Belgium in the Congo. The general survey of economics activities and commerce, which contrasted with the military and conquests that were emphasized by the French and English colonizers. For that reason the journal, focused on reconnoitring explorations and on the installation of infrastructural techniques (railroads,, ports, tunnels, canals, etc.). By means of his journal, which informed, exposed and supported the conquest, Wauters became part of the first generation which served the designs of King Leopold II in persuading the Belgians to conquer and then to establish the independent state of the Congo. It thus represented first the royal political interests and than the Belgian political interests. CONDITION: Near Fine. (Covers have light shelfwear.
