Edwin Monroe Bacon (1844-1916) was an American writer and editor who worked for the Boston Daily Advertiser and The Boston Globe and also wrote books about Boston, Massachusetts and New England. The preface reads: "The object of the Pilgrimages to historic places in New England of which account is given in these pages was to recall the early history of our country, from the beginning of the colonial period to the Revolution, through the study and inspiration of landmarks many of which are still preserved, while the sites of many more are yet easily to be identified. In going over the course laid out for the itineracy, the chronicler of these journeyings endeavored to give the true facts of history drawn from the best authorities, and so far as possible, from original sources. To this end he consulted historical students as well as historical publications; and to the former he is indebted for the correction of some popular fallacies, with new readings of some important parts of the story." This book covers landmarks of pilgrim and puritan days and of the provincial and revolutionary periods. Grey cloth hard cover with red titles on spine and front, and attractive decorations including a pilgrim on front, with no significant cover wear. xiv, 475 clean pages with advertisements at rear and extensively illustrated thoughout the text. This 1898 1st edition is in very good to near fine condition. This book was reproduced by a modern press in 2015. This copy is the original 1898 version, but its recent reproduction shows it’s value. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
