Description: This knife was with a collection of Inuit items I purchased years ago for my personal collection. The knife is, in my opinion, at least an 18th century artifact. The blade is interesting, reminds me more as a skinning or flaying blade. The spike is typical of sailors knives that have a spike for sail repairs, though this one does not seem to be sturdy enough. the blade is hollow ground, and there ae some symbols marked on it I cannot make out. In addition, the spike has a design cut into the top that almost looks like a stylized figure. The knife closes and stays in. Opened, the blade swings loosely. the tip is good. The spike wedges into the knife blade and is quite firmly in place when done so. It is a sophisticated design, and as I mentioned, the hollow grind which is done by hand tells me this was made by quite a crafts person. This knife came from a small collection of early Inuit bone artifacts I bought for my personal collection. Possibly it came from a whaling boat or sailor who collected the other artifacts. Any ideas about this are certainly welcome.
