Description: ORIGINAL 18th CENTURY FRENCH ETCHING A CELEBRATION OF THE FRENCH TRIUMPH IN THE BATTLE OF FONTENOY, April 11th 1745. One of the key battles of the War of Austrian Succession, it took place near Tournai, then part of the Austrian Netherlands. The French Army, commanded by Marchal Saxe and numbering some 50,000, prevailed over a similarly large Pragmatic Army led by the Duke of Cumberland. The casualty count was horrific, one of the most bloody battles of the 18th century. In this scene, putti, cupids or cherubs, one with trumpets (whichever you prefer to call them) cavort in the clouds, brandishing three large Fleur-de-lis symbols, in celebration of France's victory at Fontenoy (depite horrific losses). Engraved by PIERRE-ALEXANDRE AVELINE (French, 1702-1760) after a design by CHARLES-NICOLAS COCHIN THE YOUNGER (French, 1715-1790). Published in 1755. Signed/inscribed at the bottom Size of the platemark area is 14.5 x 18 centimetres, with narrow margins beyond. CONDITION. MESSY!! Stain to bottom right corner, grubby on the surface, several handling marks. SELLING CHEAPLY.
