Description: ORIGINAL 18th CENTURY FRENCH ETCHING Study of the head of an old man. After a design by RAPHAEL Engraved by CHARLES-NICOLAS COCHIN THE ELDER (French, 1688-1754) Published in 1755. Signed/inscribed at the bottom right "engraved by C.N.Cochin P." (The elder Cochin always added the letter P (for Pere, father) to distinguish his work from that of his identically-named son - with whom he collaborated on many projects. Size of the platemark area is approx 23.5 x 18 centimetres, with adequate margins beyond. CONDITION. Good. A little grubby in the blank margins, and signs of handling entirely commensurate with age. Small blemish below the eye. Printed on "laid" paper. Papermaker's watermark/filgrane visible, in the shape of a shield.
