Description: 1901 TWENTIETH CENTURY INVENTIONS: A FORECAST George Sutherland. TWENTIETH CENTURY INVENTIONS: A FORECAST (London: Longmans, Green, 1901) First Edition of a work recently reprinted as "world classic". Original hardcover binding of red cloth. 286pp.+32pp. of publisher's ads. Moderate binding wear and soil; small tear to outer joint. Former owner's pencil inscription {"In Memoriam") on half-title page. Fair to near Good condition overall. Possibly the first technological "forecast" published in the 20th century, though the author , a Scottish-born Australian journalist could not have begun to imagine the technological advancements which were to come, even as he bravely considered every possible category of future inventions, from warfare, transportation and "electric messages" to improved piano construction and "art for the millions". As futurist prediction it fell laughably short of coming reality. Sutherland might have been better served if he had seriously delved into the more imaginative ideas of the forerunners of science fiction.
