"The Doom of King Acrisius," a narrative poem by William Morris, was published in 1868 as part of his celebrated collection The Earthly Paradise. The poem retells the Greek myth of King Acrisius, who is warned by an oracle that his grandson will bring about his death. In an attempt to defy this fate, Acrisius imprisons his daughter, Danaë, to prevent her from bearing a child. However, through a divine encounter with Zeus, Danaë conceives Perseus, who grows up to become a hero. The poem traces Perseus's adventures, including his quest for Medusa's head, and culminates in the prophecy's inevitable fulfillment when he accidentally causes Acrisius's death. Morris's version of the myth explores themes of fate and human resistance against destiny, enhanced by his vivid, descriptive language. The story reflects Morris’s interest in classical themes and his poetic focus on the power and inevitability of fate.
