Description: A significantly rare and most interesting historical baseball pin once belonging to the Manager of 1902 El Paso Base Ball Club (Texas) from their participation at the 22ndNew Mexico Territorial Fair (later called the New. Mexico State Fair beginning in 1911) held in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The ornate pin with inlaid identification and Texas themed decoration illustrating a cattleman roping a steer, has the remnants of its original silk ribbon printed from the event where one can still make out “ALBUQUERQUE, NEW MEXICO,” and “22nd TERRITORIAL (Fair xxxxxxx date xxx 1902).” Indeed 1902 was the 22nd fair which traces its beginning to the first fair held October 1881. I have included in this listing a picture of an article that appeared in the July 24, 1902 issue of the “Daily Albuquerque Citizen” which describes the efforts of a committee sent by New Mexico to entice El Paso to travel to the fair to compete in a base ball match with non other than famed New Mexico Sheriff Pat Garrett (known for killing Billy the Kid) on the Committee to raise funds to offer the prize purses for First and Second Place. Reporting on New Mexico’s success, the article mentions, “The El Paso Herald now says: That El Paso will have a league ball team at the Albuquerque fair is now assured.” Certainly New Mexico’s preference to attracting the El Paso Base ball Club was in recognition of El Paso’s great baseball history that dated back to the 1890s. Back then it was reported that the El Paso Browns played the equivalent of Major League Baseball. El Paso would become no stranger to the major leagues with such players as Rube Waddell, Christy Mathewson, Hal Chase, John McGraw and many others making appearances there to play exhibition baseball. Another report indicates that another Albuquerque vs El Paso grudge match was played with Albuquerque fielding an old Kansas City Blues team and El Paso fielding many stars from the famed Chicago Black Sox team. In later years, Willie Mays, Hank Aaron, Ernie Banks and Hank Thompson all appeared in El Paso. A rare opportunity to acquire such an historical baseball artifact from the turn of the 20th century. Pin and ribbon measure approximately 7 inches long with the surviving pin in very good condition and ribbon as pictured. A real piece of baseball and WESTERN history .
