Description: First US Edition published by McClure, Philips and Co. in 1903. Overall in GOOD CONDITION. The boards have heavy corner and top/bottom wear, light to moderate edge wear. Clear green, gold and black front board and spine decoration and titling, lightly rubbed on spine but legible. There may be an endpaper missing, not sure. The first endpaper in front is the half title page, which is usually at least the second leaf in the book, while in back there is a single blank endpaper after the last publisher ad. Front and rear endpapers cracked were solidified with glue and binding binding. The result is a fully bound book, 297 pages followed by 12 pages of publisher ads. A previous owner affixed a handsome bookplate behind front endpaper. No interior marks, one dog-ear straightened. A synopsis from the internet: " 'The Adventures of Gerard' by Arthur Conan Doyle is a collection of delightful and often humorous short stories, narrated by the fictional French soldier Brigadier Etienne Gerard. Set during the Napoleonic Wars, the book offers a series of entertaining episodes that showcase Gerard's charismatic and boastful personality. Despite his vanity and exaggerated self-importance, Gerard always finds himself in extraordinary situations, displaying unexpected acts of heroism and resourcefulness. Doyle's writing is characterized by its wit and clever storytelling, making each tale a delightful blend of historical fiction and adventure. Through Gerard's entertaining escapades, readers are treated to a unique perspective on the grandeur and absurdities of war, as well as a glimpse into the mind of a charmingly flawed protagonist. "The Adventures of Gerard" is a captivating read for fans of Conan Doyle's signature wit and masterful storytelling." B136
