Description: 1906 Barre Vermont Postcard Old Woolen Mills RPPC Real Photo Rare Haunting Good condition. Slight edge and corner wear, as pictured. A nice example. Heading south on Route 14 from Barre, there is a right-hand turn that leads to Mill Street. One then crosses the Stevens Branch and follows the narrow pavement to its end where a gate blocks the path to the Barre swimming pool. At a certain point, looking across the river, one may see the site of the old mill that lent its name to the quiet country lane.Today, it is difficult to imagine the vibrant industry that once made the countryside ring with the clamor of industry. Old-timers called the area Mill Village, but on the 1873 Beers map it is called Factory Village, and a three-story woolen mill loomed over a dam and mill pond that powered these looms.Woolen mills provided industry in several central Vermont towns. There were mills in Northfield, North Montpelier and Barre; and, at one time or another, many of these mills were owned or managed by William Moorcroft. The mills were first introduced to central Vermont in the 1830s when the Merino sheep boom lent impetus to the clearing of land for pasture.
