Description: The Life and Letters of Leslie Stephen, by Frederic William Maitland. London: Duckworth 1906. Ex-library (Harvard, looks like it was never accessioned as a duplicate and ultimately released, minimal ex-lib markings). Someone, presumably a Harvard librarian, has pencilled on the front endpaper "From Mr. W. E. Darwin". William Erasmus Darwin, son of Charles Darwin, had Harvard ties through his wife Sara Price Ashburner Sedgwick, of Cambridge, Massachusetts, and friends such as William James. The book includes letters of Leslie Stephen to Charles Darwin, his wife, and son Francis. One wonders if William Erasmus Darwin was one of the unnamed individuals acknowledged by the editor at the beginning who assisted in the preparation of the volume by supplying information and letters. It would be nice if he had inscribed the volume himself, but alas, this is not the case. Moderate to average external wear, some silverfishing, a little bumping and chipping. Pages yellowed with an occasional minor blemish, binding reasonably firm. Contents VG, externally more like Good plus.
