Description: The origin of the “Keen Kutter” brand is open to scholarly debate. Edward Campbell Simmons, the Simmons Hardware Company founder, was working for Wilson Levering and Waters as a clerk in 1859. At some point in the early to mid-1860s, Simmons began operating independently. His first product was an axe that Simmons labeled as a “Keen Kutter.” Some scholars believe Simmons had a connection with Shapleigh Hardware Company, another hardware wholesaler, during his independent period. Both companies used the “Keen Kutter” brand for a short period. Simmons chose “Keen Kutter” as the brand name for its high-grade tools and cutlery in 1870. The wedge and bar Keen Kutter logo was adopted in 1904-1905 and trademarked in 1906. By 1871, Simmons was jobbing merchandise as E. C. Simmons and Company. E. C. Simmons incorporated the Simmons Hardware Company in 1874. The company was based in St. Louis, Missouri. Like Shapleigh, Simmons was a wholesaler. Edward Simmons retired in 1898, remaining active in the business for many years after that. Shapleigh Hardware Company of St. Louis, Simmons' principal competitor, purchased the assets of Simmons Hardware after it declared bankruptcy in 1939. Shapleigh Hardware continued to market the Simmons brands into the early 1960s. Val-Test Distributors, a Chicago wholesale hardware buying group, bought the rights to Keen Kutter and Diamond Edge logos from Shapleigh. Val-Test discontinued the Keen Kutter brand in the 1990s. Frost Cutlery Co. issued a line of pocket knives in the 1990s based on a limited use license for the Keen Kutter brand. The Keen Kutter trademark is now privately owned.
