Description: RARE. German text. Book is in fair to Good condition, light soiling, creases & brittle paper/pages. There is a former bookplate of Frances Rumely (Fanny) on inside front board, one of La Porte, Indiana's prominent leader's wife. Covers are weakly holding, title page is chipped & fragile, many pages uncut with a few chips. Needs conserving. While the First Edition of Edward Carpenter's shocking work "The Intermediate Sex" was published first in English in 1908, this translated edition appears to have been published in advance of that, or in 1907. Perhaps this is a publisher's discrepancy, but that is the printed date. I can't find any edition of this in German & zero copies of the 1st in English. Carpenter is known for being an outspoken homosexual, early socialist, & philosopher. He impressed Walt Whitman, Tolstoy, E.M. Forster, Jack London, George Merrill, & Ramaswamy. This work discusses the subject of same sex attraction and its acceptance or denial by society and self. RARE.
