Pagination Part One: xx, 529 pages; Part Two: 356 pages (pages numbered 327-683. The pagination is supposed to be continuous, however the 1908 second edition pagination is skewed because the 1889 first printing of Part One had only 326 pages and the second edition of Part One was greatly expanded to 529 pages without correcting the continuous pagination in Part Two.) FAIR condition, the front cover of Volume I is detached, otherwise the hinges are fairly sturdy; the covers are soiled, the covers of Volume II has a coffee or other type spill stain (that fortunately does NOT affect the inner pages); the spine ends are chipped; the last page of Volume I (page 529) is very wrinkled; there are a couple of previous owner’s relevant margin notations here and there; there is a red ink stamp on the endpapers in Japanese or Chinese; otherwise internally the books are very nice, with all the pages being tight, bright and clean. This important Chinese-Japanese language study is Hard-to-Find in its early 1908 printing, SCARCE even lacking Volume 3.
