He was the son of Supreme Court chief justice Charles Evans Hughes. He was an honor graduate of Brown University, where he was a member of Delta Upsilon fraternity. After Brown he attended the Harvard Law School, serving as the editor of the Harvard Law Review during his third and final year there. He graduated from Harvard Law School in 1912. His graduation photo appears on page 112, as member of Debating Union (unpaginated) and member of Cammarian Club (unpaginated), and finally as Manager Editor of Brown Herald (unpaginated).Admitted to the bar in 1913, Hughes was secretary to future Supreme Court Justice of the United States Benjamin N. Cardozo from 1914-1916. The yearbook is in excellent condition. It is not ex-library. There are no binding issues, there is no foxing. There are no loose or missing pages. It measures 9.75" x 8.0" and has a brown cover with gold letters. The book has 300 pages, plus 34 pages of advertisements. .
