Both US and international buyers welcome!Date of photo: May 3, 1912, Place: New York CityPhoto w/card measures 9.5"x11.5", photo without card: 7.5" x 9.75"Original 1912 large-size photo Frank Coffyn flying a Wright Model B w/floats - a Wright Model B made into a hydroplane by Coffyn and Algers...This photo belonged to Henry Woodhouse.Floats were added by Coffyn and Russell Alger, wealthy Detroit businessman. The floats were made by well-known Detroit motor boat builder John Hacker. This event was a continuation of the famous Coffyn New York/Brooklyn flying events in 1912 in which he flew under the Manhattan and Brooklyn bridges in Feb. 1912. Frank Coffyn is attempting to land a passenger on the Italian steam boat, Anocora - a very successful publicity venture by Coffyn and Algers (who also financed his other famous hydroplane flights in New York City). Coffyn did not land the hydroplane on the steamer since as there was no place to land and he would not be able to take off again, but thousands came to watch! The idea was that a passenger named, "Wallace" was late from Chicago and the hydroplane was going to get him to the steamer! Read the article in the last pic; they did get him onboard the boat. Coffyn did fly around the boat and the Statue of Liberty to the delight of the spectators. The last photo is a 1912 newspaper article about the event that I downloaded from ancestry.com. It is included as the last pic for info only. The tug you see is the John J. Timmons to help w/ the event. From Smithsonian website: "After flying with Coffyn, Alger was so enthusiastic about flying that he placed an order for a Wright plane at once and wanted Coffyn to teach him how to fly. As a result arrangements were made for Coffyn to remain in Detroit where he started to instruct both Russell Alger and his brother Fred. Alger was also an ardent yachtsman and soon they were talking of floats for the plane so they could operate it on Lake St. Clair and the Detroit River. Alger finally told Coffyn to go ahead and get some floats made if he had any ideas about how to do it. This was some time before the Wright Company made any such equipment. Coffyn conferred with John Hacker, well known boat builder, who was given an order to build a pair of floats that could be attached to the skids of the Wright plane after the wheels had been removed. These were made with an inner wooden structure covered with a sheet aluminum skin. Reportedly they were made largely to Coffyn's ideas design and were undoubtedly the first metal-covered floats ever made for aircraft use. Coffyn also devised a means of starting the engine from the pilot's seat, as it would not be possible to do so by swinging the propellers when the plane was on water."From centennialofflight.com: "A standard Wright Model B owned by the Alger brothers of Detroit, this airplane was outfitted with aluminum pontoons and flown by Frank Coffyn over New York in 1912."About float-maker John Hacker: From DetroitHistorical.org: Several of Hacker’s speed boats were named Kitty Hawk, perhaps because in 1911 he designed two floats for the Wright Brothers’ biplane, an innovation that allowed the plane to take off and land on water.Condition note: Excellent condition for being over 100 years old.
