It only had its voice trained on the side by Bernhard Günsburger. Despite his father's avowed reluctance, he went on stage as a singer and made his debut in Sondershausen in 1887.Then sang in Leipzig from 1888 to 1898. From 1898 to 1920 he had an engagement at the Berlin Court Opera, later the State Opera. [1]Knüpfer's wife was the opera singer Marie Knüpfer-Egli (1872–1924).
