ILLUSTRATOR/ARTIST: UNK OTHER: TRAVEL COVER OF THE MARKETPLACE IN ST MALO FRANCE : Saint-Malo is a historic French port in Ille-et-Vilaine, Brittany. The walled city on the English Channel coast had a long history of piracy, earning much wealth from local extortion and overseas adventures. In 1944, the Allies heavily bombed Saint-Malo. The city changed into a popular tourist centre, with a ferry terminal serving the Channel Islands of Jersey and Guernsey, as well as the Southern English settlements of Portsmouth, Hampshire and Poole, Dorset. The famous transatlantic single-handed yacht race Route du Rhum, which takes place every four years in November, is between Saint Malo and Pointe-à-Pitre in Guadeloupe. The Hamburg-Amerikanische Packetfahrt-Actien-Gesellschaft (HAPAG), known in English as the Hamburg America Line, was a transatlantic shipping enterprise established in Hamburg, in 1847. Among those involved in its development were prominent citizens such as Albert Ballin (director general), Adolph Godeffroy, Ferdinand Laeisz, Carl Woermann, August Bolten, and others, and its main financial backers were Berenberg Bank and H. J. Merck & Co. It soon developed into the largest German, and at times the world's largest, shipping company, serving the market created by German immigration to the United States and later, immigration from Eastern Europe. On 1 September 1970, after 123 years of independent existence, HAPAG merged with the Bremen-based North German Lloyd to form Hapag-Lloyd AG. In the early years, the Hamburg America Line exclusively connected European ports with North American ports, such as Hoboken, New Jersey, or New Orleans, Louisiana. With time, however, the company established lines to all continents. The company built a large ocean liner terminal at Cuxhaven, Germany, in 1900. Connected directly to Hamburg by a dedicated railway line and station, the HAPAG Terminal at Cuxhaven served as the major departure point for German and European immigrants to North America until 1969 when ocean liner travel ceased. Today it serves as a museum and cruise ship terminal.SPECIAL CHARACTERISTICS/DESCRIPTIVE WORDS: TRAVEL, was an American travel magazine, published from 1901 to 2003. PUBLISHED BY ROBERT M MCBRIDE AND COMPANY. THe magazine was first published in 1901 as the Four-Track News by the New York Central Railroad. It was sold in 1906, and went bankrupt in 1946. The title was bought out of bankruptcy by Herman Shane. Travel merged with the competing magazine Holiday in 1977, BECOMING TRAVEL HOLIDAY. The Reader's Digest Association bought Travel Holiday from the Shane family in 1986. The company sold it to Hachette Filipacchi Media U.S. in March 1996. Hachette Filipacchi closed the magazine in 2003 due to low advertisement revenue. The last issue was published in June 2003.ADVERT SIZE: SEE RULER SIDES IN PHOTO FOR DIMENSIONS ( ALL DIMENSIONS IN INCHES) **For multiple purchases please ASK FOR + wait for our combined invoice.
